If you regularly follow my blog (or me!), you know that I offer writing workshops each quarter to those interested in starting their own memoir. Hopefully, you’ve picked up on some tools and strategies from my blog posts, but for those who need an extra push or want to begin creating their memoir among like-minded individuals, I welcome you to attend my next workshop on September 15th from 10am-2pm in my home in Capitola, CA.
To RSVP or simply to get more details, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. The cost is $40, which also includes a light lunch.
A few times every year, I help those interested in writing their own memoirs gain confidence and comfort with writing, and offer advice on memoir writing that I have gained from my own experience as an author.
My next offered writing workshop will take place Saturday, Jan 14, 2012, from 10am-2pm. If you’re interested in attending, please email me (email@example.com). The cost is $40. Spots tend to fill up quickly, so confirm yours as soon as possible!
Keep writing 🙂
After my most recent writing workshop last weekend, I wanted to share one tip with my readers that we discussed:
It is so important when writing to be specific. Our communication would be so much clearer if we substituted nouns for pronouns.
Rather than saying, “It rained,” how about “Rain poured down out of the sky and splashed the street in front of my house.”
How about instead of saying, “I got in my car and drove away,” you said, “I raced out to my red Ford Escape, climbed in behind the wheel, and tore down Main Street toward my high school. I was late for geometry class.” I’m sure you can find sentences that would be clearer if they were more specific.
How do you include detail in your daily conversations and in your writing?
A few times every year, I help those interested in writing their own memoirs gain confidence and comfort with writing, and offer advice on memoir writing that I have gained from my own experience as an author. The next workshop will be Saturday, September 17, 2011, from 10am-2pm, in my home in Capitola, Calif. Lunch is included with the $40.00 fee. To register, or for more information, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
My next in-home memoir writing workshop is slotted for April 23rd from 10am-2pm. In these workshops, I help participants transition from considering writing, to actually writing! We do writing exercises to get the creative juices flowing, discuss our strengths, and share our stories.
I like to emphasize the idea that, when writing a memoir, you don’t have to start at the beginning. This is such an important point that many who are interested in writing never consider; instead they assume that because a book starts at the beginning of a tale, so should their writing.
However, it is not important that you start with your birth and continue in chronological order. What is important is that you create a written version of your experiences, joys, wishes, disappointments, loves, and whatever else is important to you! Many of the workshop attendees are at first surprised that writing about their dinner last week could ever be the beginning of a memoir, but I remind them that a memoir is a collection of the experiences that they remember, and not a biography of every step they have taken.
Email me at email@example.com if you are interested in attending the April workshop. Happy writing!
