In a Wild Wheat Field

On the Great Peace March, I wrote feature articles for The San Mateo Times to inform readers about the adventures of seeing our country from on foot and to inspire them to become involved citizens for global nuclear disarmament. On the 104th morning of the Peace March, I sat, word processor on my lap, in the middle of a field of wild wheat, and listened to the meadowlark that teetered on a wire fence. The sun was warm even before eight o’clock, not a surprise in July in Nebraska. This morning we were wakened by melodic wind chimes and as the Wake-up Marcher had meandered among the tents he had chanted, “It’s five o’clock on a clear bright day. Only nineteen miles to Ogallala.” (more…)
